Success Story 1

Mehari Ayenewile, 20 years old boy, was born in Addis Ababa. He went to the street because he lost his family. He describes his situation as follows "Before I joined the rehabilitation center and started participating in the Adolescent Reproductive Health and HIV program, I usually had unprotected sex with several girls. However, as I progressed through the RH training, I came to realize that my behavior could have exposed me to HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). I have got good knowledge of RH, STIs and HIV/AIDS including the benefit of knowing my HIV status." Now he is participating in the project as a peer educator being responsible for educating street youth, counseling and giving referral services. He used to live on the street but now he has been provided services like shelter, food, medication, education and vocational skill training.

Success Story 2

Yetimwork Haile, 18 years old, was born in Diredawa. She went to the street because of family problem. She said that " Before I start to participate in behavior change education about HIV, I used to believe that Condom was the only means to protect my self from HIV/AIDS and I usually had sex with several people both with and with out condom. However, as I pass through the training, I came to realize that condom is not a solution but abstinence and being faithful to married partner are the best methods of preventing HIV infection. I have got good knowledge of STIs including the benefit of knowing my HIV status and caring for people living with HIV/AIDS. As the result of the training program I decided to abstain from any sexual relationship until marriage and to be faithful to my husband, I hope God will help me." Currently, Yetimwork has completed a 10-month training on food preparation and catering and employed in one of the branches of Wabe Shebele Hotel at the capacity of cooker. She earns 46 USD monthly togather with additional services like mills and shelter. Yetimwork has good fellowship with members of the local church and has a plan to serve God with in the limited spare time she has.

Success Story 3

Her name is Hana Assefa and is only 18 years. She was born in Dessie and left home due to disagreements with her stepmother. New Life staff picked her up from the Stadium area where she had lived and engaged in begging and risky behavior that predisposed her to unwanted pregnancy, rape, HIV/AIDS and STIs. She said, "It is a privilege for me to be provided with shelter, food, medication and training opportunities in the project for I was in a very risky situation. Now I have got ARH knowledge, skill and services to protect myself from different RH problems and to be aware of my RH rights." She continued saying, "I had many misconceptions about HIV/AIDS and STIs and as a result I was afraid of knowing my HIV status. However, after I participated in the project I realized that even if I found myself HIV positive I can live positively with the virus and help others. Accordingly, I went for VCT and now know my status. I used to earn money through ways that put my life in danger but now I work as peer educator and have monthly incentive which I am planning to invest in income generating activities after completing the rehabilitation program of one year." Hana is one of New Life’s active peer educators involved in facilitating peer discussion, drama and referral activities in a number of streets by establishing peer discussion groups. She also provides support for street girls.
